I’m sitting in an apartment overlooking the city of Valencia, Spain. It is beautiful. The city is alive, the sun is shining, and life in Spain is good.
My son and daughter-in-law are spending three months being part-time expats in Spain. They’ve traveled around the Andalusia region of Spain,, and now have settled in Valencia for a while. My wife and I could not resist the temptation (nor should we!) to spend a couple of weeks with them.
We have always loved Spain. And this visit has just confirmed that.
Sometimes we tend to think of part-time expats as retired people who have their health and the means to travel. And, for many, that is true.
But that’s not the case with our adventurous son and daughter-in-law. They are both young professionals, working full-time while they are living here in Spain, and thus, supporting themselves. Both of them have careers and businesses that are location-independent, so they can continue to live and work as they travel.
If you have an online job or business, think about working from a location that you’ve always dreamed about. Perhaps it seems out of reach, but many times obstacles can be overcome with creative thinking, a plan, determination, and enthusiasm. Give it some thought, and open your mind to the possibility that there might be a way…..
And remember, being a part-time expat means you do it part-time. It doesn’t have to be a complete, permanent change of life, just an adventure that will bring energy, vitality, and broadening experiences to your life.
I am a big fan of part-time expat living. I recently discovered that the imaginary verb I’ve been using for some time – “expating” – is actually not original with me, and not imaginary. I was excited to see it on another blog (expating.com). I’m hoping with time, it will catch on. Help us get it into the mainstream of language!
And, then, you can tell your friends and family, “I am expating in . . . (fill in the place you’ve always want to spend time).

I can say “Amen” to it all. Being part-time expats is an amazing lifestyle—definitely, the best of both worlds for us. I look forward to seeing some of you in our travels… 🙂
